Slate Roof Refurbishment

A refurbishment is an overhaul of your existing slate roof system. We conduct a survey of the slate roof and provide a detailed report on the problems and the remedies required.

Refurbishment may be over the entire roof - which is necessary once the entire slate covering has reached the end of its useful life - or for part of the roof due to local defects. Partial refurbishment/repair includes:

• scaffolding for access and safety
• identification and isolation of any defective areas
• stripping out the damaged or decayed areas
• replacing guttering, downpipes
• replacing lead flashings and leadwork
• reinstatement with new or reclaimed materials to match existing slates

Where the visual evidence shows extensive flaking and broken, missing and dislodged slates, a high incidence of moss and evidence of multiple minor repairs or tarred slates, a full refurbishment may be required.

Full Slate Reroof

If over a period of time water has ingressed into the roof then a timber inspection will be required to check the integrity of the structural timbers.

A full roof may be required if structural timbers are rotten. Selected roof timbers would then be replaced. If existing slates were generally sound, then they can be carefully stripped and reused. Reclaimed slates would be used to make up for any slates lost to breakage.

• roof slates and ridge tiles are carefully stripped from the roof
• slates are lowered to the ground then stacked by size, thickness and shape
• structural roof repairs are undertaken
• existing roof slates are loaded back onto the scaffold
• breathable felt membrane is positioned on the structure
• new wooden timber battons are mechanically fixed
• from the eve-line slates are fixed securely to the batons
• new or reclaimed slates are added to make up the area of slate required. They replace cracked, tarred and damaged slates and blend with your existing roof
• stepped chimney flashings and aprons are installed
• supply and fix leadwork: soakers, stepped flashings and caps, chimneys, roof valleys and dormer cladding
• ridge tiles and cement verges are fixed
• guttering and downpipes are renewed if necessary
• work in lead
