Council Slate Roofs

The council house slate roofs had reached the end of their dependable lives and required multiple minor repairs.

K-Roofing refurbished Welsh slate roofs on council owned properties. The slates were stripped and relayed, leadwork, valleys, gutters, down pipes, fascia and soffits on the houses were renewed.

As part of a roofing contract for renewal or refurbishment of properties on the Birchinlee housing estate, Manchester. The slate roofing examples shown are:

• 4 house terrace
• semi detached houses
• single mansard roof

Slate Roofs

• Reclaimed Welsh slates were chosen because they have long life, aesthetic qualities and a relatively cheap price when compared with new slates.
• Choosing reclaimed Welsh slate over new resulted in significant cost savings on the slate materials without affecting the lifespan of any of the roofs
• Reclaimed slates match the look and feel of existing properties and they blended with existing slates stripped off the roof
• The reclaimed slates were matched according to colour, thickness, dimensions, flatness, and grade and edge characteristics
• Our professional slate roofing service ensures that slates remain in alignment on correctly fixed and positioned battons to ensure sufficient overlap and prevent water ingress. Slates are 'half lapped' (sit halfway across each other)

Blue Collared Slate Ridges

• The pictures of the roof ridges illustrate the fully bedded and skimmed, blue collared slate ridge.
• The interlocking collars prevent water ingress into the roof along the roofline. The ridge slates have been bedded in cement along the apex / roofline to ensure a long life span and secure fixture

Lead Valleys

• The dual pitch roofs run into lead valley and run-off is channeled into replacement gutters
• Lead valleys comprise lead sections no longer than 1.5 metres to allow for thermal movement by solar heating without loosening or splitting of the metal
• Copper nails fix the lead thus avoiding corrosion and chemical reaction
• Each lead section is nailed at the top and every subsequent section overlaps it by 150mm to prevent water ingress
