Slate Roof Refurbishment

A refurbishment is an overhaul of an existing slate roof. A roof survey provides detail about any problems and any remedies required.

Refurbishment may focus on part of the roof due to local defects or the entire roof - necessary once the entire slate covering has reached the end of its useful life. Partial refurbishment/repair includes:

  • scaffolding for access and safety
  • identification and isolation of the defective area
  • stripping off the damaged or defective slates and battons
  • replacing gutters, down pipes
  • replacing lead flashings and leadwork
  • reinstatement of slates with new or matching reclaimed materials

Evidence of potential roof problems shows as extensive flaking and broken, missing and dislodged slates, eaves in poor order, multiple minor repairs and tarred slates.

If existing slates are at the end of their useful life then a full refurbishment may be required. K-Roofing provides quotes based on detailed discussion on most appropriate recovering solution for the roof structure, age and character of the building, and we propose a solution based on materials costs that best suit your budget.

Full Slate Re-roof Repair

If water ingress into the roof has caused rot in the structural timbers then a timber inspection is required to check their integrity.

A full roof repair might be required if significant structural timbers are unsound. Full renewal of structure may then be necessary and existing slates may or may not be able to be reused, depending on their condition. Reclaimed slates make up for slates lost during renovation.

How To Slate A Roof

  • slates roofing materials - slates and ridge tiles are carefully stripped from the roof
  • materials are lowered to the ground and stacked by size, thickness and shape
  • the roof is structurally repaired
  • existing roof slates are loaded back onto the scaffold
  • breathable felt membrane is positioned onto the structure
  • new wooden battons are mechanically fixed to the structure
  • from the eave-line, slates are nailed securely to the batons
  • new or reclaimed replacement slates are added make up the area required
  • chimney flashings and aprons are installed
  • supply and fix leadwork: soakers, stepped flashings, caps, chimneys, roof valleys and dormer cladding are installed
  • ridge tiles and cement verges are fixed
  • guttering and downpipes are renewed if necessary
