Trade terms for roofing products and techniques.
Roofing Slates- Roof Pitch is the angle or slope from horizontal.
- Slate Face is the upper (sky facing) side
- Slate Bed: the underside (roor facing) side
- Slate Head is the upper edge (top)
- Slate Tail is the lower edge (bottom)
- Slate Margin is the exposed face of the slate when laid.
Slate Dressing- Ripper - tool for removing individual slates from a roof. To use, slide the slate ripper under the slate to be removed and hook the nail. The hit the handle with a hammer to remove the nailand the slate will then slide out and can be replaced. Replace using a bib flashing.
- Slate Cutter - used to cut standard thickness slates to 1/4 inch, fast and accurate, can cut strait, convex and concave to match scalloped and fish scale designs, also hand held versions with hardened steel blades for cutting cement fibre. Good for nibbling thinner slates
- Slater's Stake (flat steel T bar with pointed end to drive into wooden surface to provide a stable edge for slate trimming). A hole punch is used for thinner slates
Slate Roofing- Lap is the sloping distance the tails of slates overlap the heads of slates in the next but one course below.
- Bond (Side Lap) is the horizontal distance between the side of a slate and the side of the slate above it (this should be equal to or greater than the lap).
- Gauge: the distance between slating batten centre (and equally the depth of the margin).
Roof Tiles- Shaling - Splitting and crumbling of tiles caused by weathering. Shows as partial tiles and voids.
Lead Roofs- LDA - Lead Development Agency
- Welted lead joints - the lead is folded together to prevent water ingress.
- Welded lead joints - lead is heat sealed to for a watertight seal.
